The Best Ultra Marathons in The Netherlands

The Netherlands might be known for its picturesque windmills, charming canals, and expansive tulip fields, but for those who love to push their limits, it also offers some incredible ultra marathons. While the country’s famously flat terrain might seem less daunting compared to the towering Alps or jagged peaks of the Pyrenees, make no mistake – The Netherlands has its own unique and challenging ultra-running scene.

Here are some of the best ultra marathons you should consider if you’re looking to test your endurance in The Netherlands.

Netherlands

Kustmarathon Zeeland

Ok, it’s technically not an ultra-marathon, but with its reputation as the “most beautiful and toughest marathon in the Netherlands,” it may as well be. Kustmarathon Zeeland is a coastal classic held annually in October. The 42.2 km distance may sound modest, but don’t be fooled. The course, which runs from Burgh-Haamstede to Zoutelande, features challenging dunes, sandy beaches, and unpredictable weather conditions. For those looking to go beyond the marathon distance, the Kustmarathon offers an ultra option that stretches the route to 60 km. The stunning North Sea views are well worth the effort.

Veluwezoom Trail

Taking place in one of the Netherlands’ oldest national parks, the Veluwezoom Trail is a trail runner’s paradise. Held annually in June, this event offers distances ranging from 11 km to a full 90 km ultra. The route weaves through beautiful forests, rolling heaths, and sandy stretches, making it a true test of endurance. The undulating terrain, while not mountainous, presents its own challenge and the natural beauty makes it all the more enjoyable.

SallandTrail

If you prefer something early in the season, the SallandTrail held in March is a fantastic choice. The event takes place in the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park and offers distances up to 75 km. The rolling hills, dense forests, and occasional muddy sections provide a thrilling and varied course. It’s a local favourite and well-loved for its welcoming atmosphere and well-marked trails.

Dutch Coast Ultra Run by Night

This one is for those who enjoy a nocturnal challenge. The Dutch Coast Ultra Run by Night offers a 50 km or 75 km route along the windswept beaches of North Holland. Taking place in winter, the cold, dark, and often blustery conditions make this event a truly unique experience. With only the moon and your headlamp to light the way, it’s a mental battle as much as a physical battle.

Mud Masters Obstacle Run

For those looking to mix endurance with adventure, Mud Masters offers a range of obstacle-heavy courses that test strength, stamina, and mental grit. While not a traditional ultra marathon, some of the longer formats (24-hour challenges) will push even the hardiest of runners to their limits. The camaraderie and mud-soaked fun make this a memorable experience.
