50k Training Plan

We have designed the ultimate 16-week 50k training plan for those looking to take on their first ultra marathon.

50k Training Plan
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Ultra X aims to be the first multi-stage ultramarathon series of its kind.

We aim to transform people by offering life-changing events and an accessible pathway for anyone wanting to take on a multi-stage race. Whilst we know that everyone can take on and complete a multi-stage ultra marathon we understand that this is a huge step for most. As such, we were delighted to launch our first single-stage event in 2020 with Ultra X 50 England and since then we have launched Ultra X 50 Scotland and the Spring Trail Series by Ultra X.

In order to further assist the step towards your first ultra we have designed a 50k training plan which offers guidance of how to train for a 50k race. Please note that these plans should be used as a framework and each session should be tailored as appropriate for each individual. Follow plans blindly – without listening to your body – and you will be asking for trouble.

16-week training plan

We have designed three 50k training plans with cross training for differing levels of experience. We have categorised these as Novice, Allegiant and Pro. You can download each of the training plans by clicking the link below.

Novice

Newbie alert!

You are new to multi-day events, ultra marathons and maybe even running.

You are looking for a new or alternative challenge that gives the opportunity to be adventurous and explore new regions.

GOAL: FINISH

Allegiant

This ain’t your first rodeo!

You have tackled multi-day events and ultras before.

You are ambitious and whilst you probably won’t be standing on the podium at the end of the week, you’d be disappointed if you didn’t give it a good go!

GOAL: IMPROVE

Pro

Get out of the way!

You’re an experienced ultra runner and multi-day athlete.

You relish all that is put in front of you, seeking the fastest times, recognition for your exploits, and to push the outer limits of yourself and the sport every day.

GOAL: COMPETE
