The Best Ultra Marathons in France
France is a country synonymous with elegance, fine wine, and breathtaking landscapes. But for those of us who live for adventure, it’s also home to some of the most spectacular ultra marathons on the planet. I’ve had the privilege of running and organising races across the globe, but there’s something special about France. From the rugged Alps to the rolling vineyards of Provence, the diversity of terrain and the spirit of the ultra-running community here are truly second to none. Whilst there isn’t an Ultra X event in France yet, I’ve been fortunate enough to participate in several races there. If you’re looking for a high-altitude challenge or a multi-day odyssey through some of the most beautiful scenery Europe has to offer, France has a good selection of ultra marathons. Here are some of the best you should have on your radar.
Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB)
Let’s start with the big one. The UTMB is not just a race; it’s a pilgrimage for ultra-runners. Taking place every August in Chamonix, this 171 km ultra run around Mont Blanc is as iconic as it gets. With over 10,000 meters of elevation gain, the course is both brutal and beautiful, offering jaw-dropping views of the Alps as you pass through France, Italy, and Switzerland. It’s the pinnacle of mountain ultra-running and a must-do for anyone looking to push their limits.
Grand Raid de la Réunion (La Diagonale des Fous)
Though technically part of France’s overseas territories, La Réunion deserves a mention. Held annually in October, the 165 km “Diagonal of Fools” is known for its insane technicality and relentless climbs through the volcanic landscapes of Réunion Island. This is not just a race but a cultural event where the entire island comes alive with support. It’s pure madness in the best possible way.
Marathon des Sables
While the MdS is technically hosted in Morocco, the French influence on this legendary desert race is undeniable. Founded by Frenchman Patrick Bauer in 1986, this 250 km, six-day challenge through the Sahara is considered the toughest foot race on Earth. Its popularity within France and worldwide remains huge, and it’s one of those bucket-list experiences that every ultra-runner should consider.

Trail du Ventoux
If you want something more manageable but still absolutely epic, the Trail du Ventoux offers a punishing yet stunning route around Mont Ventoux in Provence. Held in March, it’s a brilliant early-season race that combines technical terrain with postcard-perfect views. And hey, post-race wine tasting isn’t the worst way to celebrate, right?
Ultra Trail Côte d’Azur Mercantour
A lesser-known gem, this 145 km race takes you from the glittering beaches of Nice all the way to the Alpine heights of Mercantour National Park. The journey from sea to sky is simply unforgettable, with a mix of rocky coastal trails, verdant forests, and dramatic mountain passes. If you’re after variety, this one’s for you.
Honorable Mentions:
- Festival des Templiers (Aveyron): A classic in the French ultra calendar with various distances through the beautiful Grands Causses.
- Echappée Belle (Belledonne Range): A technical beast of a race offering jaw-dropping Alpine scenery and relentless climbs.
- UT4M (Ultra Tour des 4 Massifs): A brutal circuit around four mountain ranges near Grenoble, testing your endurance and determination.
