Ultra X Tanzania is a multi-stage ultra marathon that takes place over five days in the stunning scenic and seldom travelled backcountry of northern Tanzania around Mount Kilimanjaro. The route showcases the best of Tanzania and the best of Africa. The event welcomes a very international field.

Competitors can expect to climb up part way the bucket list mountain Kilimanjaro, the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, whilst also covering savannah, forest and running or walking around lakes filled with wildlife.

During this unforgettable week, competitors will experience the place, the people, and the beauty of this iconic country in full. Ultra X welcomes runners and walkers and everyone in between. The majority of people who take part in this event will walk half the course.

THE AFRICAN SLAM!

Can you complete the continent?

The Africa Slam is awarded to those who complete all Ultra X events on the African continent.

Until the end of 2025: The Slam will be achieved by completing Ultra X Morocco, Ultra X Tanzania, and Ultra X Rwanda.

From 2026 onwards: With the addition of Ultra X South Africa and Ultra X Sahara, athletes must complete all five African events — Morocco, Rwanda, Tanzania, South Africa, and Sahara – to earn the award.

Awards will be presented at the finish line of the participant’s final African event. There is no time limit on completing the Africa Slam.

If one of your party would like to volunteer at the race while you take part, they can complete the Volunteer Application Form and we will do our best to accommodate them.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Walk in the footprints of famed explorers and mountaineers up to the top of Africa’s tallest peak. Choose from a 7 or 5 day trip.

Serengeti National Park

If you’ve made it all the way to Tanzania there is a chance you’re interested in wildlife. Our local travel partners have designed an amazing trips to experience the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire!

Cutoff Policy:

Generous time allowances of 2.5 hours per 10km. We want you to finish – and enjoy the scenery along the way.

If You Don't Finish:

In the scenario that you cannot finish a stage at one of our events, you will be offered entry into the following edition of the race at half price. You will not receive a finishers medal or official result.
