What is the purpose of the Ultra X Guardian Scheme?
The Ultra X Guardian Scheme is designed to provide support to less experienced or confident participants in our events, helping them achieve an Ultra X finish. Guardians are experienced volunteers who assist participants in the back 15% of our events and support our safety teams.
Who can become an Ultra X Guardian?
Guardians are fit, active, and experienced individuals with a passion for helping others. They must have completed multiple races of equal or longer distances than the event they are applying for.
How can I apply to be an Ultra X Guardian?
You can apply for the Guardian role on our website, similar to how you would for the Recce Team, Volunteers, and Ambassadors. Applications are vetted by Ultra X to ensure suitability.
Is it free?
Guardians receive a complimentary race entry for the event they support, volunteer race credits, a medal, and finishing time. They also get a special patch and Guardian kit.
Upon acceptance into the Guardian Scheme Guardians will be requested to make an initial £20 payment that secures their place. In exchange each applicant will receive a Guardian patch and kit to wear during events.
What’s in it for me?
Guardians receive a complimentary race entry for the event they support, volunteer race credits, a medal, and finishing time. They also get a special patch and Guardian kit. You’ll be part of a close knit team, and help participants when the going gets tough – an incredibly rewarding experience – that will contribute to the ultra running community.
What are the responsibilities of an Ultra X Guardian?
Guardians support participants in the last 15% of the race, offering navigation assistance, sharing snacks, providing company, and ensuring participants reach the finish line. They also communicate directly with event management and safety teams.
Guardians will be positioned behind or with the final runner(s) and at various points up to 10-15 km ahead of the final runner, especially at final checkpoints.
How many Guardians will be recruited for each event?
Approximately four Guardians will be recruited per UK Ultra X event, though this number may vary based on demand and event-specific factors. Initially, the scheme will be trialed at Ultra X Wales and England 2024. Depending on its success, it may be expanded to international events in the future.
How will participants identify Guardians during the event?
Guardians will wear Ultra X branded kit, including a high visibility jacket and a distinctive pink cap. They will also be introduced at the start of each event by the Event Director and MC.
