Ultra X U23 Scheme: Everything You Need to Know

At Ultra X, we believe endurance sport should be accessible to the next generation of adventurers.

That is why we created the Ultra X U23 Scheme.

The scheme gives runners aged 18 to 22 access to free entries at selected Ultra X UK events, helping remove financial barriers to trail and ultra running.

Whether you are training for your first ultra or looking for your next challenge, the U23 Scheme is designed to help more young people experience endurance adventure.

Here is everything you need to know.

What is the Ultra X U23 Scheme?

The Ultra X U23 Scheme offers free race entries to runners aged 18 to 22 across selected Ultra X UK events.

This currently includes:

The aim is simple: to make trail and ultra running more accessible to younger athletes.

Why did Ultra X create the scheme?

Ultra running can feel inaccessible for younger athletes due to the cost of races, travel and equipment.

We wanted to change that.

The U23 Scheme exists to help more young people access endurance sport, adventure and the Ultra X community.

Because the future of trail and ultra running depends on the next generation.

What do U23 runners receive?

Eligible runners receive a free race entry to participating Ultra X events.

For 2027 events, runners are required to pay a £15 deposit when registering. This deposit is fully refunded after the event provided the participant attends the event.

The deposit helps reduce unused places and no shows.

Which events are included?

The scheme currently applies to selected Ultra X UK events:

  • Ultra X Schotland
  • Ultra X Wales
  • Ultra X Engeland
  • Spring Trail Series door Ultra X

Event availability may vary year to year.

Which distances are included?

The scheme applies to selected distances across participating events.

Availability may vary depending on the event and capacity.

Please check the individual event registration page for details.

Who is eligible for the U23 Scheme?

To qualify, runners must:

  • Be aged between 18 and 22 on race day
  • Complete the standard registration process
  • Agree to the Ultra X terms and conditions

The scheme is open to runners from all countries.

Does “U23” mean under 23 at registration or on race day?

Eligibility is based on your age on race day.

If you are 22 when the event begins, you are eligible.

If you turn 23 before race day, you will no longer qualify for the scheme.

Is the scheme means tested?

No. The scheme is based purely on age eligibility. You do not need to be a student or meet any income criteria.

Is the scheme only for elite athletes?

Not at all. The U23 Scheme is open to runners of all abilities. You do not need sponsorship, elite race results or previous ultra experience.

Many Ultra X participants are taking on:

  • Their first ultra marathon
  • Their first trail race
  • Their first multistage event

You simply need to be prepared, motivated and ready for the challenge.

Do I need previous ultra experience?

Most events do not require qualification standards or previous ultra experience.

However, Ultra X events are physically demanding, and participants should train appropriately and choose distances suited to their current experience level.

All runners must also meet the mandatory kit requirements for their event.

How do I apply?

Applying is simple:

  1. Choose your Ultra X event
  2. Register through the event entry page
  3. Select the U23 option if available
  4. Provide proof of age if requested

If you are unsure whether an event offers U23 entries, contact the Ultra X team directly.

Are places limited?

Yes. U23 places are limited and allocated on a first come, first served basis.

We recommend registering early to avoid disappointment.

Can I use the scheme more than once?

Yes. As long as you remain eligible by age and places are available, you may apply for multiple events.

Can I race multiple events in one year?

Yes, subject to availability.

Many runners take part in multiple Ultra X events across the year.

What happens if I register and do not attend?

If you register for a U23 place and do not attend the event without notifying the team in advance, you may lose eligibility for future U23 entries.

The scheme is designed to maximise opportunities for young runners, so unused places impact other applicants.

Can I defer my place?

No. If you can no longer attend your event, please contact the Ultra X team so your place can be released. You are welcome to apply again for future events if still eligible.

Can I transfer my place to someone else?

No. All U23 entries are personal and cannot be transferred to another participant.

Do U23 runners compete in a separate category?

No. U23 runners compete alongside all other participants in the main event.

Some events may also recognise standout young athletes separately.

What support does Ultra X provide first time runners?

Ultra X events are designed to be welcoming, supportive and community driven.

First time runners benefit from:

  • Pre race guidance
  • Mandatory kit lists
  • Training advice
  • Experienced race staff
  • On course support
  • A strong event community

Many lifelong friendships begin at Ultra X events.

How does Ultra X keep events safe?

Safety is a core priority at every Ultra X event.

Measures may include:

  • Professional medical teams
  • GPS tracking
  • Mandatory safety equipment
  • Course checkpoints
  • Water and nutrition support
  • Weather monitoring
  • Emergency response planning

All participants must meet event safety requirements regardless of age.

What equipment do I need?

Each race has a mandatory kit list.

This often includes:

  • Running pack
  • Water capacity
  • Waterproof layers
  • Emergency equipment
  • Lighting or navigation gear
  • Nutrition supplies

Kit requirements vary depending on the event location and conditions.

How fit do I need to be?

Ultra X events are challenging and should be taken seriously.

You do not need to be elite, but you should:

  • Train consistently
  • Build endurance gradually
  • Prepare for terrain and weather conditions
  • Practice with your kit
  • Arrive healthy and ready

Is travel included?

No. Participants are responsible for arranging their own travel, accommodation and insurance unless otherwise stated on the event page.

Can international runners apply?

Absolutely. The U23 Scheme is open to eligible runners from around the world.

In 2025, runners from more than 50 countries took part in Ultra X events globally.

Can I volunteer instead of race?

Yes. Ultra X welcomes volunteers and crew members across its events worldwide. If you are interested in joining the team, please see this page.

Why are younger runners important to Ultra X?

Because endurance sport changes lives.

Ultra running builds resilience, confidence and community. It pushes people beyond what they thought was possible.

We want more young people to experience that earlier in life.

The U23 Scheme is about building the future of endurance sport and making adventure more accessible.
