Few things are as objective as Pau Capell’s current status in the ultra running world. When it comes to mountain races, he is the undisputed best. Given his dominance over the sport in recent years, it may come as a surprise to learn that Pau wasn’t always a runner, and that his journey from taking up running to becoming the 2019 UTMB champion took just seven years.
Pau was born in Sant Boi de Llobregat, a suburb of Barcelona, Spain and grew up playing tennis and football. However, after a severe knee injury at 20 years old kept him out of football and essentially inactive for more than 5 months, Pau started running to expedite the recovery process. The rest, as they say, is history.
The learning curve was pretty steep for Pau. He quickly clocked a number of wins at lower profile races and recorded countless podium finishes before his big break in 2016, when he took the win at TDS at 24 years old, just four years after starting the sport.
Since then, he’s notched an unprecedented threepeat at his “local” ultra, Transgranaria (2017, 2018, 2019), and has been crowned champion at Eiger Ultra Trail (2018), Mozart 100 (2019), UTWT Patagonia Run (2019), and of course, the big dance, UTMB (2019). Further, he finished top of the Ultra Trail World Tour in both 2018 and 2019, and was undefeated in the latter year.
Pau’s philosophy on life is to fight for his dreams (his favourite movie is Braveheart) and to love his family, and he often credits his past training as an engineer and natural problem-solving mentality as two of the main components to his success. He currently lives in Andorra with his girlfriend, Marta.
“For me, it’s a pleasure to be a part of the Ultra X Pro Team as their races will be my first try at multi-stage events. I’m excited to meet new, like-minded people, and have some life changing experiences.”
