Since giving up triathlon to focus on running in 2013, British athlete Carla Molinaro has gone from strength to strength, racking up a slew of impressive wins and course records at events all around the world, including one of the most coveted accomplishments in ultra running: the LEJOG world record.
Carla started running like many schoolchildren – at the age of 15, in circles, and through muddy fields as a cross country athlete. Always a sports fanatic, Carla attended Cardiff University after school to study Sports Science. Taking up triathlon alongside her studies, it was in Cardiff that she discovered her latent talent for sporting prowess, winning her Age Group at the European Duathlon Championships and competing at three World Championships.
In 2013, Carla entered the Glasgow Half Marathon and fell in love with the simplicity of running, prompting her to, in her words: “hang up my wetsuit, put my bike away and just start to run!”
Carla quickly transitioned to the trails, claiming a win and course record at the South of England Fell Running Championships in 2017, and has been upping the distance ever since. In 2018, she represented Great Britain at the 100km World Championships (finishing 30th in a blistering 8:23:45!) and took home a Gold Medal at the famous Comrades Marathon (which she has now completed four times), finishing in 9th place.
Carla’s seemingly unstoppable rise to stardom in ultra running looks set to continue, with her greatest achievement to date coming during the Coronavirus pandemic. In July 2020, after training under lockdown in South Africa (where she could only run up and down a 100 metre driveway), Carla set a new World Record for running the length of Great Britain, covering 1,327km in 12 days, 30 minutes and 14 seconds!
Carla divides her time between South Africa and London, and when she isn’t running, can be found coaching others to do so, as well as hosting Strength, Conditioning and Yoga (SCY) classes for runners.
“I’m excited to join the Ultra X team, not only to do their epic races but to be a part of the awesome community that they are building.”
